Resurface the Track at Riley Field with Quality Material
The Issue
This past Thursday (Oct. 6, 2022), the PTC-City Council voted to table the plan to resurface the track at Riley Field. Even more disappointing is the fact that certain council members feel it’s not used enough to warrant replacing with good-quality / rubberized material. He/they would rather we use city workers repave with plain asphalt.
The PTC Running Club set up this petition for your support. The council should know how many citizens use Riley Field's track and how many prefer to have it paved with quality, rubberized material. Asphalt just isn't good enough.
Although the path systems are available to all — there are many runners/walkers that prefer the track for speed training and for a softer surfaces on their joints. Not to mention, less risk of getting mowed over by a speeding golf cart or cyclist.
The Mayor - a runner herself - supports the cause to replace with quality material. She made it clear that the city had the money in the budget. She wants a high-quality facility for all walkers and runners. The General Public is not permitted to use Fayette County School Tracks.
Join us in your support. Sign this petition and email the council directly (council@peachtree-city.org) to share your experience. Without a safe track, there will be no Summer Track Series or fun run events at Riley.
The person who believes Riley is not used enough obviously isn’t a runner — nor do they understand why one would prefer to run on a rubberized track. It’s time that the running/walking community speak out and educate those council members. The club will be at the next city council meeting to hear the vote: Thurs, Oct. 20th.
Due to liabiltiy purposes, The PTC Running Club and other Cross Country Teams can no longer safely use Riley Field in its current state. Rejecting the current plan to resurface Riley Track with a Rubberized Material will delay the repairs to an "unknown" date. As you know, city council will need to request bids for an "asphalt" track and we will be back to square one. In the track's current state, the Running Club cannot in good conscience host another Summer Track Series there this series. We will not be able to host any of our time trials there or any future race/fun run/project. We value the safety of all runners, young or old.
If this vote does not pass on October 20th, we will have to wait another long cycle for the repairs to be done. The track will remain in disrepair and runners will be a greater risk for injury at Riley Field.
