We are a group of women from Tayside, Scotland, who have completed our families and whose husbands and partners have been denied vasectomies by the NHS Tayside. This decision is based on the categorization of these procedures as non-essential surgeries. However, for us and many others in our situation, this service is anything but non-essential. Birth control methods are not always effective or suitable for everyone due to various reasons such as birth trauma, financial constraints or personal choice. We don’t think it’s fair that this option of birth control is only available to those who can afford to pay privately.

Vasectomies offer a reliable solution that would allow us to move forward with our lives without the constant worry of an unplanned pregnancy. It's important to note that vasectomies are 99% effective and can be more cost-effective than other forms of contraception over time (source: NHS). Moreover, it's a procedure with fewer complications compared to female sterilisation (source: British Medical Journal).

We urge NHS Tayside to reconsider their stance on this issue and resume providing vasectomy operations as part of their services. This will not only benefit us but also many other families in similar situations across Dundee.
