As any artist or writer knows, especially those that do commissions, the use of AI for writing and art generation has drastically harmed the art community as a whole. AI takes art and writing sources from across the internet to improve its functionality, to make it able to generate things more accurately to how a human can.

The more AI improves, the less of a need there is for authentic artists and hand drawn works. This means people who rely on commissions, people who have made it a full time career, people with physical or mental disabilities that remove the option to work a manual labor job, have lost their jobs. Their way of eating, paying the bills, taking care of their family or pets.

A lot of artists have lived in fear of posting their own art because AI will take the art they made and use it to make them unable to earn money from it. Simply posting our own creations puts our ability to feed ourselves at risk because an AI will take aspects of our art, what makes it ours, and steal it for itself. 

However, I also know that AI can help many people. It can be used to help with school, it can help authors get ideas for stories and characters, give people a general idea of what they want before commissioning someone, and more. Text-based AIs like character.ai are also fun and for some people are a way to cope. AI is not harmful at its base, but the way it obtains what it needs to improve itself is. 

This petition is to push for a rule that makes it illegal to steal someone’s creations. I know many people who would willingly provide the AI things to grow in its skill, if it wasn’t expected of them. Have a program, website, etc where people can upload their art or writing specifically for the AI to learn from. 

I also want to push for the requirement for AI creations, especially art, to have some form of unremovable watermark to show that it was AI generated. Even if AI was not harming the community, so many scammers will generate art and try to sell it to people claiming they drew it. Multiple people have lost hundreds of dollars to someone who wasn’t creating the products they were buying. This has also affected the art community greatly. The people who care about authenticity are scared to order from any artist that can’t prove it’s their art, and the people that don’t care if something is AI no longer have use for artists with flaws or who are improving on their skill when they can get a picture perfect “drawing” for less effort.
