Metro has written and well documented restrictions on the use, storage and location of license plate readers. These standards are more strict than state regulations and address many of the concerns raised in other communities related to the use of the data as well as auditing the access to the data by those permitted to use the equipment. As chair of the Metro Council’s Safety Committee I have held hearings on this matter and will continue to ask questions and seek any additional protections if they are needed. License plate readers have been incredibly helpful in solving crimes especially abductions, property crimes and most recently the apprehension of the accused murdered of a State Police Officer, but to continue to have this resource we must make sure that all protections possible are considered.
