Sephora stores are experiencing an increase in product damage and theft, largely attributed to unsupervised children under the age of 15. These young individuals are not only causing financial loss but also creating an environment that is less enjoyable for other customers. Additionally, they are often seen stealing skincare products - items that aren't even suitable for their young skin. According to a report from the National Retail Federation, retail shrinkage (which includes theft) cost U.S retailers over $61.7 billion in 2019 (National Retail Federation, 2020). While we cannot attribute all of this to underage shoppers at Sephora specifically, it highlights the broader issue of retail theft and damage. We believe that by restricting access to children under 15 without adult supervision, we can significantly reduce these issues while maintaining a pleasant shopping experience for the customers who genuinely need and appreciate Sephora’s products.
