The Issue

Growing up on the Maple Drive estate, Bedelands Nature Reserve was more than just a location—it was an integral part of my childhood. For fifty years, I have cherished my walks in the woods, accompanied by beloved family dogs, each one enthralled by reaching the pristine waters of Valebridge Mill Pond.

This pond has not just been a scenic retreat but a cornerstone of community life for over 400 years. Generations of families and wildlife enthusiasts have found solace and joy in its serene beauty, making it a treasured local landmark. The decision to let this historic site transform into wetland diminishes its role in Burgess Hill's cultural and natural heritage, affecting not just the ecology but the community spirit forged through decades of shared memories and activities at the pond.

Historically, Valebridge Mill Pond has been a crucial habitat for diverse wildlife species, offering sanctuary and resources integral to their survival. Its open waters are vital for local biodiversity, supporting various aquatic plants and animals that thrive in such a habitat. Transitioning to a wetland could lead to a significant reduction in biodiversity, disrupting this delicate ecological balance.

Residents and nature lovers have expressed deep concerns over this change. Burgess Hill deserves to maintain its cultural and ecological heritage by restoring Valebridge Mill Pond to its full glory as a permanent open-water pond. Doing so not only preserves the local environment but strengthens our community bonds and ensures future generations can create memories akin to those of the past.

Statistics show that restoring similar sites across the UK has brought substantial benefits. Restoration efforts, like those seen at other historical ponds in the region, have successfully increased biodiversity, enhanced community engagement, and bolstered local ecology resilience.

We urge the local council and responsible authorities to prioritize the restoration project with full commitment. By doing so, we can retain a critical piece of Burgess Hill's identity and inspire an appreciation for our shared natural resources.

Please join me in taking a stand for our heritage and environment by signing this petition to save Valebridge Mill Pond. Together, we can ensure that this emblem of natural beauty continues to grace our town for many more generations.
