The Issue

The site currently occupied by the retired AES power plant sits directly on what was once the historic Old Salt Lake (Lake Salinas), registered as California Historical Landmark No. 373. Long before industrialisation, this spring-fed lake was a sacred site called Onoova-nga ("Place of Salt") for the Chowigna band of the Tongva people, and it later served as a vital ecological stopover for millions of birds travelling along the Pacific Flyway.

Today, while the California Coastal Commission has confirmed that several acres of active wetlands still survive at the site, this crucial ecological sanctuary remains heavily degraded. We cannot let this irreplaceable piece of local history and coastal ecosystem remain buried under concrete.

Our End Goal:
We call upon the Redondo Beach City Council, the California Water Board, and local decision-makers to prioritise the complete ecological restoration of the Old Salt Lake site. We demand that the area be transformed into a protected biological sanctuary and public wetlands park, returning this historic landmark to its natural state for local wildlife and the South Bay community to enjoy.

Now is our chance: with the plant decommissioned, we have to let the will of nature prevail over greedy investors!
