Update: A Community Win - and a Step Forward for Hampstead Cemetery!

We’re absolutely delighted to share some good news.
Following our deputation last night to Camden Council’s Culture & Environment Scrutiny Committee on Monday, the Council has agreed to run a pilot in 2026, extending Hampstead Cemetery’s opening hours by two extra hours during the lighter months.
It may be a small step, but it’s a significant one and it happened because of you!
More than 1,000 local residents signed, shared, and spoke up for this treasured space. You helped make sure our voices were heard. The councillors and officers acknowledged the importance of the cemetery not only for those who walk and enjoy its peace and nature, but also for families visiting loved ones who are buried there - something many have been unable to do in recent years due to the early closures.
Our deputation speakers - Fran Newell, Richard Burdett, and myself - shared how this place supports both physical and mental wellbeing, it was acknowledged by members how antisocial behaviour and dog issues have greatly improved, and how the health benefits far outweigh the modest cost of keeping the gates open a little longer.
The committee listened carefully, and for the first time in years, real progress has been made. For that we are extremely grateful, also to the Councillors who have tried to move this forward for the last three years.
We want to make this very clear: this result belongs to our community.
It was local residents, not politicians, who organised, petitioned, prepared, and spoke. People who value the cemetery for its nature, its history, and its quiet strength.
We will now stay closely involved to ensure the pilot begins on time in April 2026 and that it leads to a permanent restoration of seasonal hours in future years.
This success shows what can happen when neighbours come together with determination and respect. We did this - together - and we’ll keep going until this change is fully secured.
With heartfelt thanks to everyone who signed, supported, and stood up for Hampstead Cemetery.
Our voices mattered, and we will continue making sure they’re heard.
