The Issue

Growing up in Kerala, I've always believed that school should be a place where individuality and freedom are cherished, not stifled. When the rule to prohibit students from growing their hair was temporarily set up, it was a breath of fresh air. It affirmed the belief that our individuality, including our choice of hairstyle, is not just cosmetic but fundamental to our self-expression. Unfortunately, this rule was retracted a month later, leaving students once again facing unnecessary restrictions.

Hair is inherently a part of who we are and, contrary to school dress codes or uniforms, it doesn't detract from educational pursuits. There is no evidence to suggest that having long hair in any way impacts a student's ability to learn or a teacher's ability to instruct. The Child Rights Commission understood this when they initially advocated for the removal of this rule, recognizing that forcing students to cut their hair is a violation of personal rights.

Moreover, a ban on hair length can lead to deeper societal issues, fostering environments of conformity and acquiescence rather than encouraging young minds to think independently and stand up for their rights. Education is about nurturing responsible, open-minded citizens, not creating clones who lack the courage to express themselves.

Let’s also consider the global perspective: countries across the world, from Finland to Canada, have embraced freedom of self-expression as a crucial educational value. Why should Kerala lag behind in this progressive ideal? We should be moving forward, setting an example for other regions.

It is time to urge the decision-makers—the Ministry of Education of Kerala and the authorities in individual schools—to re-implement the earlier decision by the Child Rights Commission. Let's advocate for a policy that respects students' rights and updates school regulations so they respect personal freedoms.

I ask all parents, educators, students, and citizens of Kerala to join me in this cause. By signing this petition, you are speaking up for students’ rights and embracing a future where freedom and individuality are protected in our state’s schools.
