Restore sports programs in our community park
The Issue
Our community park has always been more than just an expanse of green space; it has been a sanctuary for our children, a place where active games and laughter filled the air. For many residents, the parks and sense of community is what brought us to move to Walsh. However, that joy has been significantly dampened. Without consulting residents, the Homeowners’ Association (HOA) decided to remove the soccer goals from Crescent Park, disrupting cherished routines and leaving our children without a venue for their beloved sport. This decision came out of fear for the turf but at the great cost of our community's happiness and cohesion.
Recently, Soccer Shots, an immensely popular soccer program for kids, was abruptly canceled. This program provided not only a constructive outlet for our children’s energy but also an opportunity for them to learn about teamwork, perseverance, and friendships. Many families had already enrolled and paid, making this sudden cessation all the more frustrating and disappointing. Without warning or clear explanation, we've been informed that Soccer Shots and our kids' cheerleading team cannot use our common area parks anymore. Rec soccer teams, comprised of 100% Walsh players, have been kicked out of the parks for practicing. Girl Scout troops have also been prevented from having a troop meeting at a public table at the market or park. These regulations seem to be excessive and out of line with other HOAs as I have spent time in other Aledo master planned communities, all of which allow organized sports practices and cheer practices in their parks.
We were not given a reason for why soccer shots was abruptly banned but have been told in the past that organized team sports were banned due to sod maintenance . There was no attempt to present alternative solutions or explore maintenance practices that preserve both the sod and our community activities. Across Texas, many communities successfully balance the upkeep of their public grounds while supporting youth sports initiatives by adopting approaches such as reinforced grass systems, rotational usage schedules, or regular maintenance funded through a small increase in community fees. We understand that the demands of club teams may exceed the demand of community parks, but we are looking for a reasonable compromise.
Prioritizing grass over growth undermines the development opportunities available to our children. Sports are foundational in fostering essential life skills and encouraging active, healthy lifestyles. Moreover, the community engagement derived from these activities is priceless. Taking away these opportunities not only affects the children but also disrupts social ties within the community.
We firmly believe that the HOA has the responsibility to consider the needs and desires of the residents. We request the HOA/developer to engage in a constructive dialogue to find a balanced solution that will not pose a disadvantage to the park's health but will restore access for all community social and sports programs.
We call upon the HOA board to reconsider their decisions and restore the community park to its former glory—one where children's laughter and competitive spirit thrive alongside well-maintained grounds. Join us in urging the HOA to reinstate these vital programs. Sign this petition to bring back Soccer Shots, replace the soccer goals at Crescent Park, allow cheerleading practice, allow troop meetings in public areas, and return joy and unity to our community parks and amenities! Residents want to freely use our amenities.
