The Issue

For as long as we've loved the Super Mario franchise, Princess Peach has been a damsel in distress, whisked away by the vile Bowser and in dire need of rescue by our joyous plumber, Mario. To many fans, including myself, Peach's character echoes the fairy-tale rescues that became synonymous with these adventurous video games. However, recent revelations suggest that this may not be the scenario in the upcoming cinematic adaptation of the classic franchise. Shigeru Miyamoto, Anya Taylor Joy, and the writers of this send-off to our cherished franchise aren't considering this classic trope.

It's undeniable that the Super Mario series has built a legacy on its storytelling. With over 40 million copies of the original Super Mario Bros sold worldwide, the narrative has touched countless lives. It's a narrative that harks back to Peach's placement in the series' first ever installment, where she was portrayed as a damsel in distress. This popular scenario has been followed by more Mario games selling well over 500 million copies worldwide.

The iconic scenario of Mario saving Princess Peach is an essential part of this story and it represents a huge part of my childhood and that of millions of other fans. Changing it would mean stripping the franchise of its identity, something we, the loyal fans, don't agree with. We shouldn't let the memories of our favorite princess be rewritten!

Therefore, we insist that the movie writers, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Anya Taylor Joy reconsider and stay true to our beloved franchise. We urge them to maintain Peach's classic role with the respect it deserves. Join this petition to ensure Peach remains the damsel we fondly remember from our childhood games. Sign today and let your voice be heard to influence the portrayal of one of our favorite characters in the Super Mario film adaptation.

Reflecting on Peach's role within the franchise, Miyamoto said that although Nintendo had intentionally kept her as a damsel in distress who is saved by Mario in the games, they had wanted to develop her into a more powerful princess in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.[20] He said that Peach was one of the characters in the film that evolved the most, as her role was changed from a princess that needs to be protected to one who fights for Toad.[21] After the release of the film in 2023, Peach's appearance was updated on the box art for Princess Peach: Showtime! to make her appear more angry and determined like her movie counterpart.[22]

The expansion of „gaming culture‟ has been one of the most debatable topics of the contemporary world. Video

games have created a huge impact upon the minds of the latest generation, especially children. There is always an

increase in the number of kids who spend time playing games and at times, they started identifying with the

characters and products associated with the games. The liking for these characters gradually elevated them to the

status cultural icons. The first appearence of the concept of videogames was implemented in the Ultima Series

Richard Garriot with Dungeons and Dragons as an influence on PC (1981). Shigeru Miyamoto featured Pauline as

the first ever Damsel in Distress and Mario as her rescurer. Pauline disappeared almost completely from the Mario

franchise and it was not until Super Mario Bros in1985 that perhaps the most famous videogame Damsel in Distress

made her debut.
