Restore or redevelop Merritt Island Mall

Restore or redevelop Merritt Island Mall
The Issue
Growing up in Merritt Island, I have seen firsthand how the decline of Merritt Island Mall impacts not just aesthetics but the livelihoods of many residents and business owners. The mall, once the heart of our shopping experience, now stands as a shadow of its former self, with numerous vacant storefronts and neglected facilities.
There is no need for this decaying mall to be in its current state, considering that per day there's roughly ~10,000 to 25,000 tourists driving through the Merritt Island area from the cruise industry and the space tourism. Peak days (launches, holidays) can easily exceed that.
Additionally with the nearby development of the Veterans Memorial Amphitheater, the new Fortenberry apartments being built, Wawa, Chipotle, Christian Brothers Automotive, and the new hospital being built across the street, the mall property is uniquely positioned to benefit from the explosive development in that pocket.
The current state of Merritt Island Mall drastically underutilizes the potential of this key community hub. It is more than an inconvenience; it is a significant detriment to local businesses, which rely heavily on the kind of foot traffic a thriving shopping center can provide. As vacancies rise, our property values decline, affecting the broader economy of Merritt Island. Not to mention the community suffers because we benefit from having a healthy shopping mall, as can be seem from the Melbourne Square Mall or the Avenues in Viera.
Shopping centers play a crucial role in local economies by generating jobs and driving consumer spending. Rejuvenating this space could open new opportunities for businesses, increase employment, and provide a safe, engaging environment for families and residents of all ages.
We call upon the property management and relevant local authorities to either restore Merritt Island Mall to its former glory or redevelop it into a modern space that meets current standards and needs. By investing in the mall, we are investing in our community's future, creating a vibrant environment that reflects Merritt Island's commitment to growth, community, and well-being.
Join us in our plea for action. Stand with us in urging the authorities to prioritize this issue and make Merritt Island Mall a point of pride once more. Please sign this petition to show your support for a better, brighter Merritt Island.
