Petition to Restore the Historic Name of Lewes Beach in Lewes, DE

We, the undersigned, are concerned individuals who urge our leaders to act now to restore the historically known name of Lewes Beach in the City of Lewes, DE. The name Savannah Beach, while lovely, does not reflect the rich history and heritage that is inherent to the name Lewes Beach.

Lewes Beach is steeped in history, with the town of Lewes being the first town in the first state of Delaware. It holds a special place in the hearts of residents and visitors alike. Changing the name to Savannah Beach dilutes this history and the strong sense of place that comes with the name Lewes Beach.

We believe that preserving historical names is important for maintaining a connection to our past and for passing on our rich heritage to future generations. Let’s remind our leaders of the Oath of Office taken by all Delaware officials, in part, to “respect the right of future generations to share the rich, historic and natural heritage of Delaware.”  Changing the name back to Lewes Beach would be a step in the right direction toward preserving our history and honoring the legacy of the City of Lewes, DE.
