The Issue

Our hearts break for the cats suffering inhumane trapping practices by our local township (Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands). These cats, many of whom are kittens, are being left without essential access to food, water and shelter. With morning temperatures already as low as -4°C, and we need to act quickly.

Community volunteers and the colony caretaker, who have an intimate understanding of the needs of the colony, have offered to assist with trapping efforts to ensure a humane approach. Their offers have been declined.

We are urging the township to:

1) Immediately restore access to vital food and water sources for these cats at the Lansdowne Waste Site.

2) Provide appropriate shelter to protect the cats against extreme cold and exposure during the ongoing trapping efforts.

3) Involve experienced volunteers in formulating a humane trapping and re-homing plan.

4) Act with transparency.

According to animal welfare organizations, responsible community cat management strategies involve a comprehensive approach: providing basic necessities, offering shelter, and collaborating with skilled volunteers.

This should be the approach we take in our township, too! Please sign this petition now, and help ensure a safe and fair outcome.
