For generations, my family has called Erin, ON, our home. We cherished our town’s unique character defined by a simple, meaningful symbol - the shamrock. The shamrock is a key part of our identity, representing our roots, traditions, and the strong sense of community we've nurtured here over the years. Recently, our town has enacted a change that many feel is unnecessary and alters the very essence of our community - they've redesigned the town logo into something that bears no resemblance to our cherished shamrock.

This issue is more profound than aesthetics. A Harvard Business School research indicates that symbols like logos can measurably affect people's sense of identity and community (HBS, 2019). The same research suggests that drastic changes without proper community consultation can lead to feelings of disconnection and resentment.

As residents of Erin, we acknowledge and value progress. But progress should not mean imposing changes that dismiss our heritage and disturb our sense of community. We, thus, express our deep concern about the redesigned logo's loss of the traditional shamrock, and urge the town officials to restore a design closer to what we had—that embraces our history and reflects our identity.
