Restore Domestic Violence Shelter Services in Nassau County
The Issue
I need to say this as plainly as possible: while Bruce Blakeman is out here running for governor of New York, women on Long Island are the ones paying the price for the choices being made right here at home. You cannot shut down a domestic violence shelter and expect us to act like that is normal. You cannot take something people need to survive and replace it with priorities that have nothing to do with keeping vulnerable people safe. And then say you care about families
In March 2025, The Safe Center LI — which provided Nassau County survivors with a Safe Home and comprehensive domestic violence and sexual assault services — closed its doors. Whatever political argument anyone wants to have about who bears responsibility for that closure, survivors should never be left wondering whether there will be a safe, dedicated place for them and their children when they are trying to escape abuse.
This is bigger than one politician and bigger than one campaign. When a domestic violence shelter closes, it is not some abstract policy debate. It means people in crisis have fewer safe places to go, fewer options, and fewer lifelines when they are trying to leave abuse. That affects women, children, families, and entire communities across Nassau County and Long Island.
Nassau County leaders need to restore domestic violence shelter services and make sure survivors have a safe, accessible place to turn in this county. That means putting survivor safety ahead of political image, ahead of vanity projects, and ahead of anything that treats women like an afterthought. If county leadership will not do that on its own, then the Nassau County Legislature must step in and make it happen.
I am asking everyone who is tired of watching women be treated like we do not matter to sign this petition. We should not have to beg our own county to protect people escaping violence. If you believe survivor safety should come before politics, add your name and demand Nassau County restore these services now.
