"Restore Dignity and Rights for Senior Citizens in India: A Call for Fair Treatment and Su

The Issue

For my elderly relatives, and countless others like them, turning 70 in India comes with challenges. The rights and privileges they once enjoyed are systematically stripped away, leaving them vulnerable and dependent. No longer eligible for government-sponsored health insurance, unable to avail loans in easy monthly installments, and denied driving licenses, our elders are left devoid of independence. Adding to this, they face a severe shortage of employment opportunities, leaving them to rely on family or social services for support. The indignity of this situation is exacerbated by their continuing obligation to pay taxes, despite the discontinuation of important benefits like discounted railway and air travel.

Statistics indicate that approximately 104 million Indians are aged above 60 (UNFPA and Help Age India, 2017). This significant portion of our population is being neglected, ignored, and disregarded by existing policies. Far from being a burden, our seniors are a reservoir of wisdom and experience. They have played a pivotal role in shaping our society and they deserve the respect and acknowledgment of society and the government alike.

We call upon the government of India to reinstate these benefits, recognize the hardship faced by senior citizens, and prioritise their welfare. Amendments must be made in the law to provide sustainable solutions such as reinstating government-sponsored health insurance, allowing easy monthly installment loans, and reinstating discounted travel for citizens above 70.

Make a stand for our elders. They have stood by us; now is our time to stand by them. Please sign this petition and show your support for senior citizens in India.
