As a devoted resident of Pendleton for the past five years, I have seen first-hand the vital role our local parks play in enriching the lives of families and fostering community ties. Unfortunately, over the years, we have watched in dismay as Chimney Pot Park, the Pendleton Estate, and Clarendon Green fell into disrepair and ultimately closed—depriving our children of safe places to play and connecting neighbours with one another.

Like many other parents, I have fond memories of spending afternoons in these parks with my three children, aged 13, 7, and 3. Each visit was filled with laughter as they made new friends, played games, and explored the great outdoors. These parks were a sanctuary where they could develop social skills, engage in physical activity, and learn to appreciate nature. However, with the closure and neglect of these spaces, my children's outdoor playtime has been significantly diminished, leaving them feeling isolated and disconnected from their peers.

Research consistently shows that access to small community play spaces is crucial for the physical, emotional, and social development of children. Play is essential for children’s development, promoting physical activity and fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and emotional resilience. Furthermore, studies indicate that children who have access to safe outdoor spaces are more likely to engage in physical activities, which is beneficial for their physical and mental health. 

Moreover, community parks serve as gathering places that cultivate a sense of belonging among residents. Community parks strengthen neighbourhoods by providing opportunities for social interaction, community events, and recreational activities that enhance overall quality of life. With the recent closure of Clarendon Leisure Centre due to a fire, our community’s options for recreation have dwindled even further, making it more essential than ever to restore and maintain our local parks and play spaces.

As our community sees approval for new housing developments, often marketed as family-friendly homes, it is alarming that there seems to be no corresponding investment in infrastructure, such as parks or play spaces, to support these families. The absence of adequate recreational facilities amid expanding housing creates imbalance and undermines the quality of life for both existing and new residents. It raises the question: how can we welcome new families into our community when there are insufficient safe spaces for their children to play and explore?

It is imperative that we urge our local council to take immediate action to revitalize Chimney Pot Park, the Pendleton Estate, and Clarendon Green. These spaces must be transformed to ensure they meet the needs of our community as safe venues for play and social interaction. This includes regular maintenance, safety checks, and community-driven initiatives designed to enhance their usability.

We cannot wait for further declines in our community's quality of life. Our children deserve the right to laugh, play, and grow in environments that nurture their development and joy.
