Thanks to everyone signing, sharing, promoting, emailing, and talking to friends, family, and colleagues we've blown the petition past 16,000!
You are helping bring trains back to Vancouver Island
There's a lot of work getting done right now!
- $18 Million was provided to Regional Districts and First Nations to work through the challenge facing us to restore the railway.
- 4 Working groups were established to work on different sections of the corridor
- Victoria to Langford
- Langford to Parksville
- Parksville to Courtenay
- Parksville to Port Alberni
- The Island Corridor Foundation received funding to make the entire 289km corridor safer by removing rockfall and trimming back overgrowth. That work continues through the summer.
- The Island Corridor Foundation hired a Corridor Project Manager and a new CEO now that Larry Stevenson is moving on.
- Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations Canada, Gary Anandasangaree, came to the island which is important in terms of reconciliation with First Nations.
- The Mayor of Esquimalt spoke publicly about utilizing the rail corridor to help with congestion.
BC Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Rob Fleming said to the AVICC in April 2024, "I'm very optimistic about Vancouver Island Rail moving forward with the Nations. Everyone is coming to the table."
Keep on sharing, promoting, emailing, and talking to friends, family, and colleagues, things are really starting to move!
