The Issue
Created by Alan Drazen in 1983, the Chocolate Taco was released by the Jack and Jill Company. Gaining popularity among ice cream truck vendors and convenience stores, the Choco Taco became a major success for both kids and adults alike. This popularity skyrocketed in 1996, when it was promoted as “America’s Coolest Taco” by Good-Humor Breyers. After forty years, the Choco Taco was unfortunately discontinued in 2022 due to rising demand across the Good-Humor Breyers (now called Klondike) brand, as the Choco Taco was not as famous as their more popular Klondike Bars. With the announcement of the Taco’s cancellation, however, came a very cryptic tweet: "we are discussing next steps, including what to do with the last 912 (we counted) tacos at HQ. Stay tuned…". Despite this post, there has never been a follow-up to this post. The last known interest in the Choco Taco came from Alexis Ohanian in August of 2022, who tweeted Unilever requesting to buy the brand’s distribution rights.
There are many misconceptions about the Choco Taco. Firstly, the Choco Taco is NOT a Taco Bell creation, despite its name being similar in phrasing to the Doritos Locos Tacos. As mentioned above, it was created by Alan Drazen, a manager of the Jack and Jill Company. There has been a misconception that Choco Taco is coming back, but that is not true. Taco Bell is teaming up with Salt & Straw to make a new desert similar to Choco Taco. It's not the same as created by Klondike - this confuses fans thinking the original Choco Taco is coming back but that is false and it is not something that is actually returning.
People also believe that the discontinuation was due to the lack of interest, and poor sales of the product. The Choco Taco had fans who still make posts about missing the product to this day, three years later. Klondike could not handle the unprecedented demand for the product, so they had to make decisions about which of their fast-selling products to cut and the Choco Taco got the knife.
Our mission is to regain traction of the Choco Taco on all social media platforms, to hopefully regain the attention of Klondike, and potentially motivate the company to produce the delicious Tacos again. The Choco Taco is loved and thought of by many to this day, and the world would be a better place with the Choco Taco in it.
