Sarada Park, situated under the jurisdiction of Maheshtala Municipality, Ward No. 14, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, India, is home to over 1,000 residents who have been living in deplorable conditions. The locality, encompassing five blocks (A, B, C, D, and E), suffers from the absence of basic civic amenities such as proper municipal roads, adequate street lighting, and storm water drainage systems. The dire state of infrastructure has been persistently overlooked, forcing residents to endure hazardous living conditions year-round, particularly during the monsoon season.

Every year, the lack of a functional storm water drainage system exacerbates the woes of Sarada Park's inhabitants as they grapple with severe waterlogging for as many as 4-5 months. The stagnant water not only disrupts daily life—hindering mobility, access to essential services, and commuting to workplaces or educational institutions—but it also poses significant health risks, fostering the spread of waterborne diseases and creating an unsafe environment for all, especially children and the elderly.

Despite numerous representations and appeals to Maheshtala Municipality, the local Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), Member of Parliament (MP), and higher government authorities including the Chief Minister, the cries for infrastructure improvements have gone unheeded. The residents of Sarada Park are left with no choice but to continue suffering due to systemic negligence and the abdication of responsibilities by elected officials and municipal authorities.

It's time for a collective demand for immediate action. We urge Maheshtala Municipality and relevant authorities to prioritize the installation of well-constructed municipal roads and street lights to enhance safety and accessibility. Moreover, the implementation of an effective storm water drainage system is crucial to preventing the recurring waterlogging issues that paralyze the community annually.
