Resignation of CEO of Loggerhead Marinelife Center

The Issue

In early 2021, the Board at Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) began a search for its new leader. They claimed that they needed someone to help this renowned facility through its expansion, inspire its staff of over 30 full-time employees, and dedicated volunteer base of over 300.

The search was tedious. Unfortunately, the wrong decision was made. When the staff heard that Kyle Van Houtan was the only candidate being considered, they did their research and what they discovered was not pleasant, nor the right fit for such a beloved community institution.

At the time, the staff (many of whom have now resigned as a direct result of Van Houtan) and volunteers vocally objected to his hiring, stating that his reputation was damaged, his integrity was questionable and some of his previous scientific publications were rebutted.

Despite the vocal majority against the decision, Van Houtan was selected to serve as the company’s new CEO. Currently, this facility is in the aftermath of this poor decision.

Under Van Houtan’s “leadership,” a significant and staggering percentage of LMC staff have resigned – 14 to be exact since his hiring last summer.

His "leadership" has touted controversy after controversy beginning with his lack of transparency and honesty with staff, volunteers, donors, and the governing Board of Directors.

For months Van Houtan lied about the status of the facility and its ability to properly care for and treat sea turtle patients.

His lack of expertise led to over 60 fish deaths (~$10,000 worth) in the month of March 2022. The animals died as a result of exposure to chlorine contamination in the water. Sea turtle patients also died under his oversight in October 2021

During his tenure, staff has been belittled and ridiculed, excluded and misled and Loggerhead Marinelife Center’s reputation in the community and amongst its peers, locally and globally, has hit rock bottom.

Today “WE”, all who sign this petition, are asking for:

  •  a full a thorough investigation into water issues
  • 100% transparency with the donors, volunteers, staff and guests

And most importantly for a vote of "no confidence" and the swift termination of Kyle Van Houtan.
