As residents of Edmonton, we care deeply about the relationship between the police and the communities they serve. Edmonton is a vibrant and diverse city, filled with individuals from all walks of life. Building and maintaining trust between the police force and our communities must be a top priority.

It is deeply concerning that, instead of focusing on local initiatives and engagement programs to strengthen these relationships, the Chief of the Edmonton Police Service recently prioritized an international policing exchange in Israel. Many residents are particularly troubled that the chief chose to travel to Israel, a country currently engaged in ongoing military conflict, to learn policing practices, especially given concerns raised by human rights organizations about discriminatory tactics used by Israeli police in the region. This decision has heightened fears among local communities about whether such approaches could influence policing priorities here in Edmonton.

While international exchanges can offer insights, they should never overshadow the importance of understanding and addressing local community issues. Many residents feel that prioritizing these international programs over meaningful local engagement demonstrates a failure to connect with and protect Edmonton’s diverse communities.

The role of the police in our city is to protect and serve ethically and effectively. Leadership must reflect the values and needs of Edmonton’s residents and ensure that sustainable, trust-building initiatives are firmly in place at home. Decisions that risk alienating communities cannot be excused under the banner of “learning abroad.”

For these reasons, we call for the resignation of the Chief of the Edmonton Police Service. New leadership is urgently needed to prioritize trust, inclusivity, and genuine engagement with all communities in Edmonton.
