1. First, thank you everyone for signing our petition. We've received 211 signatures in only a few short days. CHEK News covered the tragic January 3, 2025 crash that killed one of our community members earlier this week. You can find the coverage here: https://cheknews.ca/police-seek-witnesses-of-fatal-pedestrian-crash-in-nanoose-bay-1232761/
2. Second, we would like to get as many signatures as possible in order to present our petition to our MLA and the Minister of Transportation in the Legislature. We would like to reach our goal of 500 signatures before sending this to our provincial representatives -- this will underscore that this is an issue that people in our community care deeply about. We have been in touch with our MLA's office about our concerns about road safety, and her staff have responded in a positive manner.
We have yet to hear from the Ministry of Transportation or our MP. We will keep you posted as things unfold.
3. Finally, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE THIS PETITION WITH YOUR NETWORKS. We will be printing off hard copies of the petition for volunteers to canvass your local streets/neighbours if you would like to help out. More details will be shared on the Concerned Citizens of Nanoose Bay Facebook page (feel free to join our group to follow along) and will be posted on other Nanoose Bay facebook pages where/if allowed by their moderators.
It's time for all levels of government to commit to adequate enforcement and to listening to concerns of residents about ongoing danger zones in the community. We all deserve to get home safely on our roads.
If you would like a hard copy of the petition to canvass your neighbourhood, please free to email me at zoe_todd@sfu.ca.
kindly,
Zoe Todd
