For a true Dragon Age fan, The Veilguard was a heartbreaking blow. Everything we loved about such a complex and richly layered universe feels, in our eyes, as though it has been watered down and desecrated, almost as if a gravestone had been placed over a franchise that made gaming history. It is both disheartening and heartbreaking to see the wonder that Dragon Age once was, represented in the media by a final chapter so utterly removed from the narrative framework that made Thedas what it was.
While the dark, fairytale-like wonder of the masterpiece that is Dragon Age: Origins gradually faded somewhat throughout the second and third instalments, they still remain worthy companions on the journey. Dragon Age II is a bittersweet little gem, especially considering how little development time it got, while Dragon Age: Inquisition may lack narrative cohesion above all else, but it still offers moments, characters, and lessons that are simply irreplaceable. After all, we're talking about the 2014 Game of the Year!
In our hearts, the saga's true ending remains the conclusion of Trespasser. Everything that came after it, as far as we're concerned, exists outside the "true" canon. The writers who helped make the trilogy great were, for the most part, not involved in that project, and the result was not only narratively impoverished and often cartoonish, but also an unmitigated commercial failure. A shortsighted and deeply misguided business decision that failed to make the most of a world that still had so much left to offer.
What we hope for, what we dream of, is that one day, after BioWare's closure at EA's hands, another studio might come along and save this magnificent and compelling saga. Give us a Legendary Edition of the trilogy, perhaps with a few little touches here and there to strengthen its narrative cohesion, and officially strike The Veilguard from the canon — maybe turn it into a story told by Varric, to give him a chance to put that quill to use? — or, at the very least, find some way to restore the fortunes of a world that helped make video game history.
And honestly? That's the dream!
