Require unified definition of "assault weapon" in government

The Issue

As a veteran, hunter, and law-abiding citizen, I feel compelled to address the ongoing debate and confusion surrounding the term "assault weapon." Having served my country and dedicated my life to both protecting others and exercising my rights, I have witnessed firsthand the misconceptions and manipulation of definitions surrounding this term. I urge for clarity and consistency, calling for all US federal and state governments to be bound to a single, unified definition of "assault weapon."

The term "assault weapon" has sparked significant debate and controversy, often resulting in broad interpretations that can lead to misunderstanding or deliberate misinformation. Various government officials and departments have attempted to redefine this term to suit specific agendas, which has contributed to confusion among the public and hindered meaningful discussion around gun control and firearm legislation.

I propose that we adopt the legal definition established by the US Military, the first entity in the country to coin and use this term, which became popular during the Cold War era.

Military Definition:

"An assault rifle is historically defined as a select-fire rifle that uses intermediate cartridges and has detachable magazines. It is capable of both semi-automatic and fully automatic firing modes. This is the original military definition, such as those used in the Cold War era (e.g., M16, AK-47 in their military forms)."

This definition is clear, precise, and would prevent the misinterpretation or exploitation of the term for political purposes. A standardized definition would eliminate any opportunity for governmental manipulation and facilitate informed dialogue and decision-making processes.

By aligning with the US Military's definition, we ensure that legislation and policies will address the true attributes and functional characteristics of firearms, maintaining a focus on public safety without infringing upon the rights of citizens. This change promises to stop government offices and agencies from unjustly targeting and banning firearms based solely on their resemblance to military weapons, preserving the rights of hunters, veterans, and responsible gun owners.

Join me in urging the government to adopt this definitive, standardized definition of "assault weapon" to promote clarity, proper regulation, and the protection of our constitutional rights. Please sign this petition to bring about meaningful change and ensure our voices are heard.
