O problema

Tybee Island, Ga, is a unique and vibrant community with a rich culture and pristine natural environment that draws visitors from near and far. However, the delicate balance between welcoming tourists and preserving the community's quality of life is at stake. The City Council of Tybee Island is attempting to add 243 more Short-Term Vacation Rentals (STVRs) to the existing limits for all zones, including residential neighborhoods like R1/R2. This drastic increase threatens to alter the character of our neighborhoods irreversibly and could have lasting negative impacts.

### Impact on the Community

Increasing the number of STVRs in residential areas could lead to issues such as noise disturbances, increased traffic, impact on an already suffering infrastructure and a decline in long-term residency, which is crucial for maintaining a strong, vibrant local community. Families that have been part of Tybee Island for generations may find themselves priced out or unable to enjoy the peace of their own neighborhoods due to the influx of temporary visitors.

### Protecting the Island's Environment

More STVRs mean more people, more cars, and more strain on local resources. If more buildings are built to be STVR'S, this has the potential to negatively impact the sensitive ecosystems and wildlife that inhabit Tybee Island. Sustainable tourism that respects both the community and the environment is necessary to preserve the island for future generations.

### Actionable Solutions

We urge the City Council to maintain the established STVR Ordinance agreed to in 2024 and permanently prevent the addition of anymore STVRs  on Tybee Island. By setting a cap on the number of STVRs and focusing on sustainable tourism policies, we can safeguard Tybee Island's unique character and ensure it remains a desirable place for both visitors and residents.
