The Issue

In the vibrant community of Norfolk Virginia, where culture is celebrated, I, along with my dedicated team, poured our hearts, countless hours, and personal funds into organizing Caribfest with the Virginia Caribbean-American Cultural Association (VCACA). For an entire year, we tirelessly worked on every minute detail, from logistics and programming to marketing and vendor coordination, with the understanding that our efforts were not only valued but would also be compensated accordingly. However, post-event, our expectations were shattered when we were informed we were considered mere volunteers.

This unexpected revelation came without prior disclosure, leaving us not only financially burdened but also questioning the integrity and fairness of non-profit organizations like VCACA. We were told—only after concluding the enormous task—that there was no monetary compensation for our contributions, contrary to the assurances we received. It felt like our passion and hard work were taken advantage of, leaving a scar on what should have been an enriching experience.

Our plea is simple: transparency and fairness. Non-profit organizations like VCACA should be mandated to disclose payment terms for all services rendered by volunteers before they commence work. Having clear, written agreements in place will not only protect volunteers from unforeseen exploitation but will also uphold the trust and mutual respect needed in communities.

According to the Independent Sector's 2023 data, volunteer time is valued at $29.95 per hour in the United States. Volunteers contribute enormously to social causes, and it's essential that they are respected and informed partners in these initiatives, not undermined or misled. Implementing a requirement for non-profits to disclose compensation terms will ensure accountability and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

We urge the state of Virginia, and associated entities to enact policies that protect volunteers and ensure organizations like VCACA operate with integrity. By doing so, we honor the essence of volunteerism—selfless contribution, not exploitation.

Join us in demanding transparency and fairness for all volunteers. Let's safeguard the dignity and respect of those who generously offer their time and skills for the betterment of our community. Sign this petition to make a change, ensuring that the spirit of volunteerism is honored, not abused.
