Require the NHS to perform a neurological exam on all newborn babies
The Issue
When Freddie was born, we were filled with joy. However, that joy quickly turned to worry when he was diagnosed with a bleed on the brain. It was only through a head scan that doctors were able to identify the issue, as he was in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for an unrelated reason. This scan gave us the chance to pursue vital medical interventions early on, providing him with the best possible chance for a healthy future. Unfortunately, not every parent is as fortunate.
In the UK, newborn babies do not routinely undergo head scans unless there is a specific indication or they are in critical care. This means that serious conditions such as intracranial bleeds, hydrocephalus, or other brain abnormalities can go undetected, potentially leading to long-term developmental issues or even life-threatening complications.
According to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, neonatal neurological conditions are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in newborns. Early detection through non-invasive head scans like ultrasounds could significantly improve outcomes, ensuring timely treatment and better quality of life for these infants.
With the NHS already providing excellent neonatal care, adding routine head scans for all newborns is a feasible step towards even better health outcomes. Such scans can be performed using safe, low-risk ultrasound technology, readily available in hospitals across the UK. The initial costs of implementing this routine check could prevent the more significant financial and emotional burden of treating advanced conditions later in life, thus proving cost-effective in the long run.
Many countries have already incorporated similar screening measures with great success, showing a reduction in the number of severe undetected cases. It is time for the UK to follow suit and ensure that every child gets the healthy start they deserve.
By signing this petition, you are advocating for a simple yet crucial change that could save lives and safeguard the future of countless children across the UK. Let's work together to make routine head scans for newborns a non-negotiable aspect of neonatal care in the NHS. Please sign this petition to urge the NHS and healthcare policymakers to implement this vital screening for the benefit of newborns nationwide.
