The Issue

Adult animation has an important place in comedy, satire, and artistic expression. Programs such as South Park deliberately address controversial subjects and are intended for mature audiences. Adults should remain free to create and watch lawful satire, including material that some viewers find offensive.

At the same time, distributors and streaming platforms should take seriously how mature animated content is presented and made accessible to younger audiences. Animation can contain explicit sexual references, graphic violence, drug use, strong language, and other material that parents may reasonably want to restrict.

This petition calls on television networks and streaming platforms distributing mature animated programming to strengthen age-appropriate safeguards rather than relying on censorship as the first solution.

Platforms should provide clear and prominent content information, effective parental controls and age-profile restrictions, consistent maturity classifications, and additional care when sexual material involves characters depicted as minors. Marketing for mature programming should also avoid targeting children or presenting adult-oriented material in contexts primarily intended for young audiences.

These standards should distinguish between lawful fictional expression and illegal exploitative material. Offensive or controversial satire is not automatically illegal content, and concerns about media should not be used to make unsupported claims connecting a television program to criminal activity.

Protecting children and preserving freedom of expression do not have to be opposing goals. Adults can retain access to lawful mature entertainment while families receive better information and practical tools for controlling what younger viewers can access.
