Require Stricter Protections for North Atlantic Right Whales

Require Stricter Protections for North Atlantic Right Whales
The Issue
I am the founder of the non-profit organization and website (www.nottherightwhale.org) "Not The Right Whale", or NTRW for short. NTRW is an NPO dedicated to the protecting and education on the North Atlantic Right Whale species, a critically endangered species with less than 380 individuals remaining. I believe it is imperative for both the Government of Canada and the Government of the United States of America to implement stricter regulations on fishing, boating, and entanglements during the crucial calving seasons every year. The North Atlantic Right Whales are facing extinction largely due to human activities. These majestic creatures give birth in the coastal waters of Florida and Georgia, and migrate north to feed in the rich waters off the eastern United States and Canada. During these migration and calving periods, they are particularly vulnerable to ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements, leading to horrific injuries and often, death.
With two recent mortalities of young Right Whales like Division in early January, and another calf of Portia recently found dead, the need for more petitions like these are imperative.
Currently, regulations are either outdated or not strictly enforced in many areas where these whales frequent. By enforcing stricter speed limits for boats, implementing exclusion zones during calving seasons, and adopting innovative fishing gear that reduces entanglement risks, we can significantly improve the chances of survival for this species.
Furthermore, collaboration between Canada and the U.S. is crucial as these whales do not adhere to political boundaries and require consistent protection throughout their range. Ensuring their survival requires a coordinated international effort.
Our planet's biodiversity is invaluable, and every species, especially those on the brink of extinction, plays a pivotal role in maintaining the health of our oceans. By taking strong, immediate action, both governments can set a global example of wildlife preservation and show the world that we prioritize the protection of our natural heritage.
Please sign this petition to urge the governments of Canada and the United States to implement and enforce stricter protections to save the North Atlantic Right Whale before it's too late. We need to protect our lovely ocean neighbours together.
