The Issue

In British Columbia, our children and youth are experiencing unprecedented exposure to social media platforms. These platforms are often designed with algorithms meant to capture and retain attention, sometimes leading to addictive behaviors. Unfortunately, the consequences are becoming evident in various aspects of young people's lives, including mental health, self-esteem, sleep, attention, and overall well-being. This growing issue necessitates immediate intervention from both social media companies and local authorities.

Data from numerous studies backs the detrimental effects of social media on the mental health of youth. The Canadian Pediatric Society has warned about the risks, stating that excessive use is linked to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. A 2020 study discovered that 38% of Canadian teenagers report feeling negatively impacted by social media. Despite official age restrictions on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, a significant number of underage users manage to bypass these limits simply because age verification is inadequately enforced.

Parents often feel powerless as they witness the pervasive influence of these platforms on their children. While limiting screen time is one approach, it is not a complete solution. It's time we hold social media companies accountable for strictly implementing age verifications. They must develop more robust systems to ensure adherence to age restrictions. Advanced artificial intelligence technologies could be utilized to accurately verify user age without infringing on privacy rights.

British Columbia's youth deserve protection and a healthier environment that supports their development, free from the harmful effects of unfettered access to social media intended for adults. By enhancing age verification protocols, we can mitigate the adverse impacts on our young people's mental health.

Let's unite in calling for immediate action—sign this petition to require social media companies to effectively verify and uphold age limits to protect our youth's future in British Columbia and across Canada.
