Every day, thousands of eager music students face the challenge of transporting their instruments to and from school. These instruments, especially the larger ones, can be bulky and difficult to carry in school buses. This petition proposes a practical solution: to mandate all school buses to have dedicated areas for storing musical instruments during transit.

Data from the National Association for Music Education reveals that approximately 20% of students in American public schools participate in music-related activities. This represents a substantial number of students potentially affected by the current lack of storage spaces.

Implementing this simple measure can significantly improve the overall experience of our young musicians, encourage participation in music activities, and ensure the safe transport of valuable instruments. As a students who rides the bus myself, and also plays an instrument, I can for sure say that instruments have become a problem on school busses. They take up a lot of space on the bus and can be a hassle to get on and off of the bus with instruments. This also proposes a safety hazard as some people may not be able to get off the bus in case of an emergency. 

Overhead shelves or racks should be implemented into school busses as a means of safter travel for children. Another solution for this problem also reduces the amount of kids on a bus. Seats toward the front should be removed and a rail should be added. This would benefit as more storage space for instruments and creates less chaos on the school busses as a means of people on the bus.

Emergencies: Data collected from the National Safety Council (NSC) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Show that over 26,000 school transportation vehicles were involved in motor vehicle accidents in 2024. This will be a safety issue for all children. For example, if a bus rolls onto its side, then some students may be trapped because of instruments in seats. This is a huge safety risk because of trapped students being stuck inside of a burning school bus. According to NHTSA, roughly 104 students were killed in school bus accidents in 2022.

Electric busses: Electric busses propose an even higher risk of danger because of spontaneous combustion. This can cause many students to be trapped or gain serious burns on their skin. Instruments cause students to be trapped inside of a bus because of melting cases (if plastic) and not being able to move the instruments in time to escape. 

Conclusion: Shelves or places to store instruments would be a crucial detail in a school busses because of serious safety risks. If these racks were included in school busses, students would be able to move more freely inside of the bus as a means of escape or tragedy. In case of an accident, students can be able to use emergency exits because instruments would not be blocking exits.
