Require recess for students of all ages in schools
The Issue
Every child deserves the joy, freedom, and health benefits that come with a daily recess period. I've seen firsthand how crucial recess is not just for young children, but for older students too. Recess isn't just about taking a break; it's a vital part of childhood that fosters creativity, encourages social interaction, and promotes physical health.
Currently, many schools across the country provide recess exclusively to elementary school students, leaving middle and high school students without these crucial benefits. This lack of recess can lead to a sedentary lifestyle among older students, contributing to health issues like obesity and mental health struggles such as depression and anxiety. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children and adolescents should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day, something that is increasingly difficult without a structured break like recess. Many kids may not have any time after school to exercise due to studies and chores.
Moreover, research shows that regular physical activity through recess can improve attention, behavior, and academic performance among students. Schools that have implemented recess periods for all ages have reported improved teacher and student satisfaction, increased cooperation, and fewer disciplinary issues. Despite this evidence, too many schools are overlooking the necessity of recess for all students.
We urge school districts to implement mandatory recess periods for all students, regardless of their age. A simple 30-minute recess can lead to healthier, happier, and more successful students who are engaged in their learning and better equipped to face the challenges of adolescence and adulthood.
Let's ensure that every student has the opportunity to exercise, de-stress, and socialize in a positive environment. Join me in calling on school officials and policymakers to make recess a reality for every student, not just the youngest ones. Please sign this petition and help make a change that will benefit our children's futures.
