The Issue

Please sign this petition urging the Michigan Legislature to pass a law requiring radon testing in all Michigan schools. This is a simple but life-saving policy that will protect students, educators, and staff from radon.

Why This Matters

  • Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S., causing over 21,000 deaths annually (EPA).
  • It’s a colorless, odorless radioactive gas that seeps into buildings
  • 1 in 4 homes in Michigan have radon levels above the EPA safety threshold (4.0 pCi/L), yet schools aren’t required to test at all.
  • Children are more vulnerable to radon exposure, and many school buildings have never been tested.
  • Testing is inexpensive and non-disruptive
  • At least 10 other states, including Connecticut, Oregon, and Virginia, have passed school radon testing laws. It’s time for Michigan to follow suit.

What This Law Would Do

  • Require all Michigan schools to test for radon.
  • Mandate retesting every 5 years, or sooner after renovations.
  • Require mitigation if levels exceed 4.0 pCi/L.
  • Make results publicly available to families and staff.
  • Ensure new schools use radon-resistant construction techniques.

Michigan kids deserve to learn in safe, healthy classrooms that are free from cancer-causing gases. Let's protect our future.
