Require Pioneer Grove Educational Center To Install Fencing for Student Safety

The Issue

My own child, who is on the autism spectrum, is one of many children who are at risk at Pioneer Grove Educational Center. Like many children with autism, he has a tendency to elope, or run away. Despite our best efforts to ensure his safety, the unsecured conditions of the playground have resulted in dangerous situations.

During recess, the lack of a secure encasing such as a fence leaves students vulnerable to potential accidents. From our experience,  we’ve had incidents where children have run off into potentially harmful areas. These include a retention pond, dynamic streets bustling with traffic, and an expansive parking lot.

According to Autism Speaks, nearly half of children with autism will attempt to elope from a safe environment. This rate has risen nearly 20% over the last two years, underscoring the urgent necessity for secure playgrounds. This issue isn't unique to my son or other students at Pioneer Grove - it's a nationwide crisis affecting thousands of families with children on the autism spectrum.

It's time Pioneer Grove Educational Center took action. By installing a fence around the outdoor areas where students play, the school can provide a safer environment and give peace of mind to concerned parents like me. We ask the school administration and local authorities to prioritize our children's safety and take immediate action. Please sign this petition and urge Pioneer Grove Educational Center to create a secured outdoor area.
