Hey all, if you're local or use public transit for any reason; you're probably aware of the growing population of personal pets and an abundance of personal belongings onboard public transit. I have created a petition aimed at changing that, specifically, in the local area. 

I recently experienced a situation on public transit in Washington where I was asked to move from my seat for a dog in a stroller. It was frustrating and felt unfair that I had to give up my spot for someone who didn't necessarily "need" it as a human passenger would. This experience highlighted a growing issue in our public transit system – the lack of regulations and documentation requirements for pets traveling on buses and trains alongside us.

Imagine you are on your way to work in the bustling city of Olympia or Seattle and you find yourself standing for your entire commute because someone’s pet or personal belongings are occupying a seat, and it's not even officially allowed or documented. Time and again, commuters have voiced concerns over pets taking up space meant for human passengers, often without any verification that they are legally allowed or necessary on public transit.

Requiring minimal bags on board & legal and current documentation for pets on public transportation would ensure that only essential travel is permitted, safeguarding seats for those who need them most – human commuters. Many public transit systems around the world have successful implementations of pet riding regulations, which emphasize clarity and passenger comfort. By introducing a straightforward system where pet owners must present valid documentation monthly, we can maintain fairness and order.

Such a solution is not just feasible but essential for the growing metropolitan area of Washington, where the number of pet owners is on the rise. According to the American Pet Products Association, approximately 70% of U.S. households own a pet. With such significant numbers, the potential strain on public resources and passengers is undeniable should there be no regulation.

We urge the Washington State Department of Transportation to introduce mandatory documentation for all pets traveling on public transit. This documentation should be easily verifiable and renewed on a monthly basis to ensure it remains up-to-date and accurate.
