As someone who is personally affected by government shutdowns, I am fed up with politicians getting a free ride and not suffering the consequences of their decisions. When they decide to shut down the government, it results in thousands of government workers, including my friends and family, losing their pay and facing unnecessary financial hardships. It’s time for politicians to share in these consequences.

Government shutdowns bring severe impacts not only on federal employees but also on the economy as a whole. Essential services are disrupted, and the lives of everyday citizens are thrown into disarray. Yet, politicians continue to receive their pay and benefits as if they are unaffected by the very decisions they make.

In recent years, the frequency of government shutdowns has increased, showcasing the political power plays and impasses that harm the nation. According to the Congressional Research Service, the U.S. has experienced several government shutdowns, with over 20 since 1976. The two longest lasting shutdowns were 35 days in 2019 and 43 days in 2025. Each of these has caused significant financial strain on thousands of government employees and contractors who live paycheck to paycheck.

Enacting legislation that mandates the immediate suspension of all pay and benefits for politicians during any level or completeness of government shutdowns would ensure accountability. Politicians should experience the same consequences as the government workers they represent. Doing so would likely make them reconsider frequent shutdowns as a means to an end and instead encourage more dialogue and compromise.
