Require Media Outlets to Announce Spoiler Warnings before Revealing F1 Race Results
The Issue
A dedicated Formula 1 fan, I am not alone in my desire for a chance to immerse myself in the excitement of the race even if I cannot watch it live. High subscription fees restrict many of us from accessing live races and so, we rely on catch-up TV or other means to follow our favourite drivers and teams. Thus, when radio and TV media prematurely announce the results, it robs us of the thrill that is integral to our love of the sport. For the fans who simply want a brief warning to adjust our volume or look away, this is not a big ask.
Beyond our engagement and allegiance to the sport, there are compelling reasons for the media to consider. According to Statista, in 2020, the cumulative television audience of Formula One racing amounted to about 1.5 billion individuals globally. By ensuring a spoiler warning, media outlets can maintain the viewership and loyalty of this vast audience, much of which might prefer to experience the race in their own time rather than prematurely knowing the outcomes.
We implore all radio and TV media outlets to respect the passion of Formula 1 fans worldwide and put measures in place to announce spoiler warnings before revealing race results. This simple measure could do wonders for maintaining a dedicated and passionate fanbase. Please sign this petition and support our call to keep the thrill alive in Formula 1.
