Every time I visit the grocery store to purchase organic products, I am confronted with a troubling contradiction. As a parent and concerned citizen, I try to make healthier choices for my family by selecting organic foods that avoid harmful chemicals. Yet many organic products sold under the President’s Choice brand come wrapped in single use plastic packaging. This is a serious health and environmental concern.

Soft plastic packaging can leach microplastics into the foods we eat. These particles are linked to long term health risks including hormonal disruption and other illnesses. The same plastics are also difficult to recycle, and once discarded they persist in the environment for centuries. This adds to the growing plastic pollution crisis that harms wildlife and natural ecosystems.

Global plastic production now exceeds 300 million tons each year. A significant amount ends up in oceans where it threatens marine life. With production expected to increase fourfold by 2050, action is urgently needed. Loblaw Companies Limited which oversees all President’s Choice products is in a position to lead change by adopting safer and more sustainable packaging.

We urge the company to explore compostable materials, reusable formats or biodegradable options for its organic line. Companies around the world have already made successful transitions to environmentally responsible packaging which shows that meaningful change is possible.
