The Issue

Every summer in our beloved community of Guerneville, CA, we brace ourselves for the terrible news: yet another family devastated by the loss of a loved one to drowning at one of our local beaches. Despite the joy and beauty the Russian River offers at Steelhead Beach, Sunset Beach, and Monte Rio Beach, almost every year, someone drowns unnecessarily.

These are popular spots in Sonoma County, attracting residents and tourists alike who seek relaxation, fun, and nature’s rejuvenation. Throughout the warm months, visitors flock to these areas to swim, picnic, and enjoy the sun. However, the lack of lifeguards on duty at these beaches presents a grave danger to all who enjoy them.

Last summer alone, nearly a hundred thousand tourists visited the Russian River valley, a testament to its popularity and the potential risk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1-14, making the presence of lifeguards not just beneficial but essential.

By mandating lifeguards at Steelhead, Sunset, and Monte Rio beaches, we can provide the community and visitors with a safer environment. The presence of trained lifeguards would dramatically reduce the likelihood of tragic loss of life, offering immediate assistance in emergencies, enforcing safety regulations, and preventing accidents before they occur.

Implementing a lifeguard program can be an effective measure. It could be funded through local government support, partnerships with local businesses benefiting from tourism, or small visitor fees. These solutions are feasible, and the cost of not acting is far higher – measured not just in dollars, but in human lives.

This is a call to action for Sonoma County officials, community leaders, and residents to prioritize safety and prevent needless tragedies. With your support, we can urge local authorities to take immediate steps to ensure lifeguards patrol these beaches during the summer months.

Sign this petition to protect our loved ones and visitors by advocating for mandatory lifeguard presence at Steelhead, Sunset, and Monte Rio beaches. Together, we can make a significant impact in safeguarding our community.
