Require International Students to Provide Bank Statements

Require International Students to Provide Bank Statements

The Issue

As a currently homeless individual, I recently experienced waiting on a bitingly cold night, unable to access hot food services at Trinity Church because it was filled to capacity with international students. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated issue but one faced by many natives across the country. Canada is proud of its open policy toward international students, and we wholeheartedly welcome them. However, it is crucial to ensure that Canadian resources are distributed fairly and that our most vulnerable citizens are not deprived of aid.

According to EduCanada, annually Canada hosts over 642,000 international students which is a number almost equal to the total homeless population of the country. These students, in theory, should have the means to support themselves as per the Canadian immigration requirements. Yet, important resources such as food banks, soup kitchens, and community meals at churches are increasingly being utilized by said students. This increases the waiting lines, restricts the access for the local people in need, and depletes resources meant to serve our most fragile populations.

We propose that international students be required to show sound bank statements ensuring they are capable of covering their basic needs rather than relying heavily on Canadian public resources originally intended for those experiencing homelessness or living in poverty. Services should prioritize the most desperate cases, and they should not be taken for granted by those who can afford to make ends meet.

We shouldn't have to choose who in need gets to eat and who doesn't. It is time to address this issue. It's time for fairness. It's time for change. Please, sign this petition to ensure a fair distribution of services among our people.
