Require immediate resignation and by-election for MPs who change parties

The Issue

Party affiliation is crucial in Canadian politics, as it conveys the values and policies that an elected Member of Parliament (MP) is expected to support. Canadians make their electoral choices not solely based on personal attributes of the candidate, but largely due to their party’s platform and promises. This connection between party and representation is vital, and its disruption undermines the democratic fabric of our nation.

I have witnessed instances where MPs elected under a specific party banner have chosen to cross the floor or sit as independents, fundamentally altering the representation of their constituents without any input from the voters. This situation compromises the integrity of our electoral system, as voters find themselves represented by someone whose current political stance they did not endorse. The Canada Elections Act, as it stands, permits such shifts, thereby diluting the electoral mandate provided by the people.

Amending the Canada Elections Act to mandate the immediate resignation of MPs who choose to leave their party or sit as independents would fortify our democratic principles. By triggering a by-election under these circumstances, we ensure that any significant change in political alignment is sanctioned by the electorate. This process not only respects the voters' will but also holds MPs accountable to their constituents throughout their term.

My proposal allows the MP to run again under their new party affiliation or as an independent, thereby maintaining their right to seek public office. Nonetheless, it insists that any alteration in party alignment must be approved by the constituents who elected them.

Several democracies around the world have adopted similar measures to preserve the sanctity of political representation and maintain public trust in the electoral process. It is time for Canada to embrace this change for a more transparent and accountable governance system.

I urge the Government of Canada to take immediate action by amending the Canada Elections Act to include this requirement. It is imperative that voters determine the political trajectory of their representation in Parliament, and not merely the politicians themselves.

Please join me in demanding this essential change to protect our democratic values. Sign this petition to voice your support for a fair and forthright electoral process in Canada.
