The Issue

The once unthinkable violence that unfolded at Brown on December 13, 2025 has affected not only Brown students near the shooting, but our entire community. In an effort to rebuild our home and heal, signing this petition to require ID card swipes for all Brown buildings regardless of time of day and advocate for more + higher quality security cameras could help students and families feel more safe and contribute to preventing a tragedy of this magnitude. Though ID swipes and cameras may not be the root cause of violence, taking steps that make people feel safe and having informative tools in the case of an emergency is critical too. If you feel this would be a good rule to implement, please sign this petition. Thank you.

UPDATE: President Christina Paxson has stated that swipes will be required for buildings 24/7. The few buildings that have keyed access will be kept locked. The petition will continue to advocate for more + higher quality security cameras.

The primary motivation of this petition is to do anything possible to support our community and help people feel safe, not to point fingers. Brown is a place where no darkness goes unturned into light. You will see that the tragedy that occurred will come to be defined by how we came together rather than the violence that took place, and it will be a source of hope for us and for all across time, land, and sea. And there is nothing more powerful than being a part of that. We're going to honor the victims, pray, listen, and take action. EVER TRUE.
