Require HSV Testing in Standard STD Panels Nationally

Require HSV Testing in Standard STD Panels Nationally
The Issue
For many of us, this is a personal battle. Billions worldwide are affected by HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus), a deeply misunderstood and underdiagnosed disease. Many of those infected can unknowingly spread this virus without exhibiting any visible physical symptoms. For those who do show symptoms, the severity can range from mild and occasional to extreme and relentless. The psychological impact on those diagnosed cannot be overstated, creating insurmountable levels of stress, anxiety, and in some cases, depression.
Standard STD panels currently do not require HSV testing, leading to gaps in diagnosis and treatment. Considering that about two-thirds of the global population under age 50 has HSV-1 and almost half a billion people worldwide are living with genital herpes infections (HSV-2), which makes the likeliness of contracting HIV increase threefold, this issue should no longer be ignored (World Health Organization, 2020).
Inclusion of HSV testing in standard STD panels will not only lead to more proactive diagnosis and prevention but also will contribute to mental health support for those dealing with the psychological aftermath of diagnosis. This will also result in more research going into treating and eventually eradicating this virus for good.
With this petition, we urge our national health authorities to make HSV testing an indispensable part of standard STD panels. Let's fight together to create a world where no one is left in the dark about their health status. Please sign this petition to revise testing protocols and shine a light on HSV.
