Currently, country of origin labels are only required on some food products sold in Canada. Even when included, these labels are frequently in such microscopic fine print that shoppers trying to buy Canadian products have to devote considerable time to tracking down the labels and squinting to read them!

Mandating highly visible country of origin labels on all food products would enable Canadian consumers to quickly and easily find out where their food comes from, and empower them to buy Canadian if they so choose.

A requirement like this would not be without precedent. Australia requires that certain foods "grown, produced or made in Australia" display a charming Kangaroo logo, along with a bar chart to indicate the proportion of Australian ingredients. With sufficient political will, Canada could implement a similar system - perhaps with a maple leaf!

Particularly in light of the current trade war with the United States, Canadians should be able to walk through a grocery store and easily see which food products were produced in this country.
