The Issue

Mt. Bachelor currently requires all riders to wear helmets when using the lifts during summer bike park operations, but does NOT enforce the same safety requirement during winter ski and snowboard operations. This inconsistent safety policy puts winter guests at unnecessary risk. Same lifts, same risk, different rules. Why This Matters: 1. Inconsistent Safety Standards - Mt. Bachelor acknowledges that helmet use is essential for summer lift-accessed activities - Winter skiing and snowboarding carry equal or greater head injury risks - The same lift infrastructure serves both seasons—safety standards should be consistent   2. Head Injuries Are Preventable: - Traumatic brain injuries account for a significant percentage of serious ski/snowboard accidents - Studies show helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 35-60% - Many serious injuries occur on groomed terrain at moderate speeds, not just in terrain parks or the backcountry.
3. Industry Precedent - Multiple resorts worldwide have implemented mandatory helmet policies to ride lifts - Ski racing organizations require helmets at all levels - Insurance data consistently supports helmet mandates for reducing injury severity
4. Protecting All Guests - Children are particularly vulnerable to head injuries - A mandatory policy eliminates peer pressure against wearing helmets - Creates a culture of safety that protects both beginners and experts
Our Request: We, the undersigned, respectfully request that Mt. Bachelor and POWDR Corp: 1. Implement a mandatory helmet policy for all guests using winter lifts, consistent with summer bike park requirements 2. Provide a grace period of 30-60 days with education and warnings before enforcement 3. Offer helmet rentals at reasonable prices for guests who don't own helmets
Supporting Arguments: - It's already your policy in summer - extending it to winter simply maintains year-round consistency - Liability protection- proactive safety measures demonstrate duty of care - Family-friendly- parents can feel confident their children are protected - Medical cost reduction- fewer severe head injuries benefit everyone
If helmets are essential for summer mountain biking at Mt. Bachelor, they are equally essential for winter skiing and snowboarding. We urge Mt. Bachelor to prioritize guest safety by implementing a consistent, year-round helmet policy.
