Require gender-neutral bathrooms in all Illinois dwellings
The Issue
In the past two months alone, I have personally experienced six separate incidents of harassment and discrimination due to the lack of gender-neutral bathroom facilities. Each incident was a painful reminder of the discrimination faced by many in our community simply for needing to use a restroom. It's a moment most take for granted — a basic human need — yet it has become a constant challenge and source of fear for those of us identifying outside the traditional gender binary.
Illinois prides itself on its progressiveness and commitment to diversity and inclusion, yet many of us still face barriers that challenge these ideals. Currently, there is no mandate that requires residences, whether public or private, to provide gender-neutral bathrooms. This lack of requirement leaves many vulnerable to harassment, discrimination, and even violence.
Statistics show that more than 70% of transgender and gender-nonconforming individuals have faced confrontation or harassment in public restrooms. Despite similar experiences being commonplace, legislative action remains lacking.
I am calling on the state of Illinois to implement a mandate that requires every dwelling, public or private, to include a minimum of four gender-neutral single-person bathrooms. This action would not only serve as a protective measure but would also send a strong message against intolerance and bigotry.
Opponents might argue that such a mandate could be costly or unnecessary. However, numerous studies have shown that providing gender-neutral bathrooms is cost-effective and can significantly ameliorate the daily lives of countless individuals. Furthermore, this requirement could be phased into new constructions and renovations to minimize impact and ensure smoother transitions.
Making gender-neutral bathrooms mandatory ensures that everyone can access restroom facilities safely and with dignity. It reflects a commitment to equality and respect for all individuals, irrespective of their gender identity.
Let's urge the Illinois State Legislature to take a strong stand for inclusivity and safety by requiring adequate gender-neutral bathroom facilities in every dwelling across the state. Making this change is a simple yet profound step towards ensuring a genuinely inclusive society.

In the last 2 years, I have been a victim of a couple of homophobic and/or misgendering incidents and including bathrooms, and this summer alone, I was the victim of 3 to 6 incidents. Illinois to start with Illinois needs to have at least 4 minimum gender, neutral, single person bathrooms in all facilities, public or otherwise. And just illinois to start , but all fifty states need to have this implemented
