Require Fair Trial Standards in Cases Involving Trans Victims and Ban LGBTQ Panic Defenses
The Issue
A Tennessee court has overturned the conviction of a man who killed a Black transgender woman, ruling that a lower court “erred” by preventing the killer from using the victim’s trans identity in his defense.
I am furious that a person can shoot a woman six times, be convicted of manslaughter, and then get a new trial because she was trans. That is what pushed me to speak up. A human being lost her life, and instead of that being the focus, her identity is being used in a way that risks even more injustice.
This is bigger than one case. When bias against trans people is allowed to shape what happens in court, it sends a message that some victims matter less than others. It tells trans people, their families, and the whole LGBTQ community that equal justice can be bent by prejudice. We cannot keep saying every life matters while allowing courtroom standards to fail the very people most at risk.
That is why I am calling for clear, enforceable fair trial standards in cases involving trans victims. Courts must ensure that gender identity is not used to inflame bias, distract from the violence, or undermine accountability. This also includes a complete, national ban on LGBTQ panic defense strategies that are still legal in 30 US states. Judges and court systems need stronger guidance and training so that every victim is treated with equal dignity and every case is decided on facts, not prejudice.
If you believe a trans person is a human being deserving of the same justice as anyone else, please sign this petition. We need systemic protections that make it harder for bias to reopen wounds and weaken accountability. Sign and help demand a justice system that treats trans victims like human beings.
