I live in Durham Region, where the winter months bring not only the beauty of snow but also the challenges it poses for many residents. For some, it's merely an inconvenience, but for others, like many seniors and individuals with physical impairments in our community, it is far more than that. When snowplows clear the roads, they leave behind mounds of snow that effectively barricade driveways, cutting off access and creating barriers that are insurmountable without assistance.

Imagine not being able to leave your home because the snow is piled high at the end of your driveway. For many, this isn't just about convenience—it's about safety and the ability to maintain independence. Many community members rely on access to services, medical appointments, and daily necessities, all of which become inaccessible when driveways are blocked.

Right now, Durham Region's snow plowing process ends up creating more issues for those who are most vulnerable. It's time for change. We need the Regional Municipality of Durham to invest in new snow plow technology or modifications that push snow further to the side where it won’t block driveways. Other communities have effectively implemented solutions like 'driveway plow guards' which temporarily raise the plow's blade just long enough to prevent blocking individual driveways.

Our community deserves to have unobstructed access to roadways, and it's an achievable goal with the right investment and commitment from our local government.
